Toad is touring again!!!!!!!

I ran across this tasty bit of news on Toad's Wikipedia page of all places. Sure enough, check out Glen Phillip's tour listing page, where he lists upcoming Toad shows separately.

I've gotta go to one. I've got to.

What the HAL?

As I've mentioned, I run Gentoo Linux on my desktop (dual-booted with WinXP). Because I like to have the "latest and greatest" software available to me, I run the unstable ~x86 branch. Which means that some things don't work out of the box, and on any given upgrade those things can change quite drastically.

It also means that sometimes its hard troubleshooting. The Gentoo forums are a great resource, but by its very nature, Gentoo is a person...

Why not to get involved with Darfur

It's a simple answer: Because interventionism never works. Justin Raimondo gives a longer answer.

Bar none

Why do people use the phrase "bar none"? Has anyone ever heard it used not in conjunction with a superlative? For example, "La Roma's makes better wings than any other pizza place in the world, bar none." Doesn't the "better than any other pizza place" explicitly include all pizza places? So why "bar none"? Without the "bar none" would we think possibly we were barring one or more? I don't think so. Therefore, it is redundant.

Playing with udev

For awhile now, I've been trying to get my Clié working consistently under linux. Today, I finally was able to get it syncing properly with udev and gnome-pilot.

Here's the udev rule that did the trick:

BUS=="usb", SYSFS{product}=="Palm Handheld", KERNEL=="ttyUSB[13579]", NAME="tts/USB%n", SYMLINK="pilot", GROUP="usb", MODE="0660"

While I was at it, I went ahead and set up rules for the Clié's USB storage in...

It just keeps getting worse for GM

As if it's not bad enough that General Motors keeps posting losses and cutting jobs – they're making horrible marketing decisions as well.

General Motors, which spends [$1.3 billion per year] on marketing for North America alone, got bitten recently by ceding control of the latest campaign for its Chevrolet Tahoe sport utility vehicle to the public. Trying to ...

The mathematician wakes (and comments on Objectivisim)

First, let me say it's good to see that Dave finally posted something to his blog. It's been awhile!

As he mentions, recently we've had a few discussions about Objectivism as I've gleaned some of that philosophy from the writings of Ayn Rand – primarily the audiobook version of [ASIN:0452011876|link] and a few of her essays...

A libertarian, existential review of Serenity

Just ran across a pretty good review of the movie Serenity (the movie continuation of the TV series Firefly) at Reason. Pretty interesting stuff.

House prices in gold declining

If you saw last night's episode of Lost, you'll remember the climax where Hurley (aka Hugo) nearly followed his alterego "David" over the edge of the cliff, allegedly to wake up from the dream that (according to David) Hurley had been living in for a number of years. Just now, I think I took the plunge from which Hurley refrained.

Since about last August, I've been on the brink of the question, "Should I buy gold?" I nearly have bought an ounce or two several times. Sin...

Baldwin Entertainment Group and Atlas Shrugged

Today I finished listening to an audiobook version of Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand's seminal philosophical novel about individualism versus collectivism, capitalism versus socialism, selfishness versus altruism. I have a bit to say about it, but wanted to limit myself initially to stating that apparently the Baldwin Entertainment Group is working on a film adaptation ( -->
