The problem with the LP

I just read a good article at Free Market News Network about the foolishness that calls itself the Libertarian Party. Now, don't get me wrong – I find that I agree with the LP much more than with pretty much every other party out there, certainly more than the two major parties. That said, it still is a political party, and as such, unfortunat...

Financial files

On Saturday, I spent a good part of the day going through our designated basket that contains old bills, receipts, statements and other fiscal miscellania. I didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted. One of the reasons is that I watched most of the Lord of the Rings trilogy while going through the papers (it's hard to concentrate on financial minutiæ with roaring orcs in the background). But another reason is that our current filing system just doesn't cut it.

I mean, do...

The Yakuza welfare state

Even non-libertarians have got to agree that giving old Yakuza members social security is just plain wrong.

People Who Don't Know They're Dead: Haley Joel Osmond's memoirs

Think the movie Sixth Sense was nothing more than a bit of too-clever fiction? Think again. There are people out there who, apparently, make a living by counseling the dead. And now there's a tell-all book – People Who Don't Know that They're Dead: How They Attach Themselves to Unsuspecting Bystanders and What to Do About It – describing how they do it. And from t...

States without income tax

Can you imagine not having to pay state income tax? I can't either. Well, apparently there is an Eldorado of sorts out there. Seven states in the US apparently have no – that's right, no – income tax. Only one of them is east of the Missisippi.

  • Alaska
  • Florida
  • Nevada
  • South Dakota
  • Texas
  • Washington
  • Wyoming

On top of that, two states only tax dividend and i...

Libertarian case against abortion

Even in my own (admittedly shallow) dives into libertarianism, I've noticed that, just as within the larger world, there are a host of different opinions on various topics. Although the basic principle of liberty (aggression is always wrong) and the first harmonic of ideals that stem from it (therefore, murder, rape, fraud, etc. should be outlawed) are ubiquitous, there are a lot of issues that have tended to fractionalize the libertarian movement. One of these issues is abortion.

Who can replace the estimable Harry Browne?

On Wednesday, Harry Browne – investment advisor, best-selling author and two-time Libertarian Party presidential candidate – died of Lou Gehrig's disease.

My own forays into libertarianism have begun only fairly recently, since Harry's last bid for the presidency. Nevertheless, much of what I have learned, and accepted, about libertarian political philosophy has come from Harry's writings and speeches. Like many others who have come to espouse the tenets of liberty, ...

Would you please me?

Every day in my job, I work hard to make sure that the sentences I write make sense; that in particular, they are concise, coherent, and complete. My livelihood depends upon these criteria, and as such I have come not only to understand their importance, but also to develop ways in which I might ensure that they are met.

Which is why I cringe whenever I receive messages from my wife like the following one:

Would you please me? I can't find ...

Back on the juice

My blog is back up – yay! Last week, the hard drive on my server went to Cairo in a handbasket, and we lost a bunch of data. Fortunately, the database containing all my blog data was untouched. Hopefully, I'll be able to restore all the info from the other sites I run as well.

Incidentally, the server exploded right after I taunted the FBI. That's one for the C&C Music Factory....
